The Patio Blog

When the pandemic drove me into my house in March, my small suburban plot on a cut-de-sac in Marietta, Georgia, became a place of wonder. Sitting for many hours on the stone patio in my backyard, I have watched hawks and buzzards vie for control of the nearby cell tower, turtle hatchlings cross my yard headed for the pond in the park, and fireflies make a comeback. This blog is about my reawakening to the land that is literally within my reach. It is also about life in the American suburbs at a time of environmental, economic, and existential crisis. How will we live going forward? This is the question of our age.
